Spectroscopy of diffuse ionized gas in halos of selected edge - on galaxies ?
In order to examine the excitation and ionization mechanism of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (DIG) we have obtained optical longslit spectra of seven edge-on spiral galaxies. In four objects the brightest emission lines can be traced out to distances of typically 1.5 kpc above the disk. For NGC 1963 and NGC 3044 line ratios such as [N ii] λ6583/Hα or [S ii] λ6717/Hα as well as [O iii] λ5007/H...
متن کاملIonization Sources and Physical Conditions in the Diffuse Ionized Gas Halos of Four Edge-On Galaxies
Deep long-slit spectra of the diffuse ionized gas halos of the edge-on spiral galaxies NGC 4302 and UGC 10288 are presented. Emission lines are detected up to about z = 2 kpc in NGC 4302, and to nearly z = 3 kpc on the north side of UGC 10288. For both galaxies, the line ratios [N II]/Hα and [S II]/Hα increase with z in accordance with dilute photo-ionization models. Runs of [S II]/[N II], and ...
متن کاملDiffuse Ionized Gas in Spiral Galaxies: Probing Lyman Continuum Photon Leakage from Hii Regions?
As part of a large study to map the distribution of star formation across galactic disks, we have obtained deep Hα images of the nearby Sculptor Group spirals NGC 247 and NGC 7793. These images are of sufficiently high quality that they allow identification and analysis of diffuse Hα emission at surface brightness levels ranging from those of extremely low density HII regions to those of the lo...
متن کاملMaximal halos in high-luminosity spiral galaxies
We test the halo dominated mass model, recently proposed for high-luminosity galaxies, against the rotation velocity data of a large sample of L ∼ L∗ spirals. We find that this model does not reproduce the general kinematic properties required. The alternative disc dominated model, on the contrary, easily fits the data.
متن کاملThe warm ionized medium in spiral galaxies
This article reviews observations and models of the diffuse ionized gas that permeates the disk and halo of our Galaxy and others. It was inspired by a series of invited talks presented during an afternoon scientific session of the 65th birthday celebration for Professor Carl Heiles held at Arecibo Observatory in August 2004. This review is in recognition of Carl’s long standing interest in and...
